Memory foam is known for contouring around your body and cushioning pressure points, but not every memory foam feels or performs the same. Amerisleep’s Bio-Pur® is a proprietary type of memory foam designed to retain the material’s pressure-relieving qualities while offering greater airflow and faster responsiveness.

Bio-Pur® is Amerisleep’s proprietary viscoelastic memory foam. Like conventional memory foam, it conforms under body weight and pressure. The main differences involve its formulation and more open cellular structure.
Bio-Pur® replaces some petroleum-derived ingredients commonly used in polyurethane foam with plant-based oils, including castor oil. It is therefore more accurately described as partially plant-based memory foam, rather than an entirely natural material.
Traditional memory foam is polyurethane foam engineered to respond to pressure and heat. It gradually conforms around your body and slowly returns toward its original shape after pressure is removed.
This characteristic creates the deep, cushioning sensation associated with classic memory foam. It can provide excellent pressure relief and motion isolation, although denser formulations may retain heat or make changing sleeping positions more difficult.
One of Bio-Pur®’s primary differences is its open-cell construction. The larger, more open cellular structure is intended to allow greater airflow through the foam and reduce heat buildup.
That doesn’t mean Bio-Pur® will necessarily feel as airy as other mattress constructions. The complete mattress—including its cover, support layers, thickness, and overall design—also affects temperature regulation.
Traditional memory foam varies considerably. Some modern versions also incorporate open-cell structures or materials designed to improve temperature regulation.
Classic memory foam is intentionally slow-moving. If you enjoy feeling deeply cradled by your mattress, this can be appealing.
Bio-Pur® is engineered to recover more quickly after compression. This more responsive feel may make changing positions easier, particularly if you tend to move between your back, side, and stomach throughout the night.
However, responsiveness depends on the complete mattress construction rather than the Bio-Pur® layer alone.
Bio-Pur® retains one of memory foam’s biggest strengths: contouring. It compresses around areas such as your shoulders and hips, helping distribute weight across the mattress surface.
Traditional memory foam can provide excellent pressure relief as well. The distinction is primarily in the feel. Bio-Pur® aims to provide contouring without creating as much of the slow, deeply enveloping sensation associated with some conventional memory foams.
If you share your bed, motion isolation may be particularly important. Memory foam naturally absorbs movement rather than allowing it to travel easily across the mattress.
Bio-Pur® maintains this characteristic, but high-quality traditional memory foam can also perform exceptionally well in this area. The difference is that Bio-Pur® combines motion absorption with a design intended to respond more quickly when you move.

Its plant-based distinction comes from replacing a portion of the petroleum-derived ingredients normally used in foam production with plant-derived oils. Describing it as having reduced petroleum content is therefore more accurate than calling it petroleum-free or completely natural.
Bio-Pur® is CertiPUR-US certified. Amerisleep also describes the material as low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
